CARIBBEAN
MEDIA AND TOURISM INDUSTRY TO PAY TRIBUTE TO ANDRIA HALL
CASTRIES, Saint Lucia (October 20, 2009) - Andria Hall, the late CNN news
anchor, author and communicator, will be honored by media, tourism stakeholders
and young people gathering for the 18th meeting of the Caribbean Media Exchange
(CMEx) in Saint Lucia from December 3 to 7, 2009.
Andria Hall’s legacy will be honored at the opening of the conference, at Coco
Palm’s Conference Centre in Rodney Bay Village.

Hall, an Emmy award winning journalist,
Christian communications strategist and a key member of the CMEx production
team, passed away last January after a two year battle with breast cancer.
“All the innovation, spiritual uplift, underlying intellectual elegance
and divine optimism evident at CMEx was influenced in some way by Andria,” said
CMEx
director Lelei LeLaulu, who recalled Hall was a gentle force who deeply touched
the lives of those with whom she connected.
LeLaulu said he was pleased that members of Andria’s immediate family along with
several of her close friends will make the journey for a
Caribbean Memorial of Andria.
“We miss her deeply,” said fellow CMEx director Dr. Basil Springer, who admitted
he still cannot believe Andria
has departed the earth. “The CMEx family looks forward to gathering in Saint Lucia
to reassure her family that Andria’s mission continues
both on earth as well as in heaven,” he added.
The theme for the CMEx December meeting is “Multicultural Marketing: A
Climate for Change.” Underlying the provocative presentations and lively
discussion is how tourism can improve the health, wealth, education,
environment and culture of destinations in a “climate-friendly
fashion”, as delegates examine how to “climate proof” Caribbean
tourism as well as build resilience into a recessionary environment.

Houston Launches “Where the Chefs Eat” Culinary tours Oct 2009

Houston Launches “Where the Chefs Eat” Culinary Tours

Top Houston Chefs Expose City’s Foodie Secrets

Houston, TX October 19, 2009 - Houston restaurants have been making
national news lately.  Houston chefs have graced the covers of Food and
Wine and Bon Appetit, brought home James Beard Awards and have enjoyed
the kind of recognition that many residents and foodies feel has been a
long time coming.

But it’s not the upscale restaurants that set Houston apart from major
foodie cities like Chicago, San Francisco or even Las Vegas.  It’s the
small, independent, ethnic restaurants whose recipes have been passed
down from generation to generation that separates Houston’s personality
from other cities.  And four Houston chefs-all who have the clout and
national reputations to simply rest on their laurels-have made it their
mission to show both residents and visitors the underbelly of Houston’s
foodie scene.

In conjunction with Whole Foods Market and the Greater Houston
Convention and Visitors Bureau, chefs Bryan Caswell (Reef, Little Bigs
and Stella Sola), Randy Evans (Haven), Monica Pope (T’afia and Beaver’s)
and Chris Shepherd (Catalan) are launching culinary tours to showcase
Houston restaurants, markets and neighborhoods that make Houston one of
the most diverse culinary cities in the world.

With only 15 people per tour, the participants will gain intimate
knowledge about the city: unexplored neighborhoods; undiscovered
restaurants; and markets and farmers that contribute to the
locally-driven menus of each chef.

Each location is selected by the chefs, so the tours vary, depending on
which chefs are leading. All tours will begin and end at Whole Foods
Market.

About the Chefs

Bryan Caswell

“All of our food is born from these types of places.  It’s the
foundation of what we do.”

Staying true to his Gulf Coast roots, Chef/Owner Bryan Caswell imparts
his love for fishing and the ocean in his seasonally-changing,
award-winning Reef restaurant. Diners love the spot’s refined blend of
locally-grown produce and use of Third-Coast-caught seafood, as do
foodies on the national stage. In 2009, Caswell was named a
Semi-Finalist for a James Beard Award, Food & Wine magazine named him
one of the “Top 10 Best New Chefs,” and he was named to Continental
Airlines’ Congress of Chefs. Stay tuned as he continues to expand his
biz in Little Bigs-his laid-back, slider-serving burger joint and wine
bar concept.

Randy Evans

“A lot of people miss Houston’s rich history-homegrown and
immigrant-because they stay in their own little bubble and don’t really
know what their city has to offer.”

Hot on the heels of opening his new certified-green restaurant, Haven,
Executive Chef and Co-Owner Randy Evans continues to source
locally-grown produce in his modern Texas-style cuisine. The
restaurant-which opened in October ‘09-is the product of Evans’ more
than decade-long experience in Houston’s culinary scene. As Executive
Chef of Brennan’s Restaurant, the Art Institute-grad was named one of
three “Chefs of the Future” by Texas Monthly magazine and “Upcoming Chef
of the Year” by My Table magazine. Evans has also published an
award-winning cookbook, The Kitchen Table.

Monica Pope

“We always say that it’s the people that make Houston what it is. These
are the people that make Houston.”

Dubbed the “Alice Waters of the Third Coast,” German-born,
Houston-reared chef Monica Pope has been revolutionizing Houston’s
culinary scene since she opened her first restaurant in 1992. She shares
her passion for connecting local farmers and consumers in her successful
Midtown Farmers Market, weekly cooking classes and t’afia and Beaver’s
restaurants. Pope has also enjoyed national recognition in the form of a
James Beard award nomination and remains the only Texas woman chef to be
named Best New Chef by Food & Wine thanks to her inventive, “eat where
your food lives” cooking style.

Chris Shepherd

“There are actually very few people living in Houston that are
originally from here, so we have access to so many cultures-things to
see and things to taste. People need to take advantage of that.”

Midwest-raised Chef Chris Shepherd spent weekends as a child scouring
farms throughout Oklahoma in search of straight-from-the-vine tomatoes,
fresh corn and peas. Today, he’s the mastermind manning the stoves at
Houston’s Spanish-leaning, boundary-pushing Catalan restaurant-a place
Robb Report recently declared one of its 100 Favorite Restaurants in the
world. There, the Art Institute-alum and former Executive Sous
Chef-turned-Sommelier of Brennan’s brings his farm-to-table passion to
fruition in decadent dishes like the wildly-popular crisp pork belly
with cane syrup and Foie gras bon bons.

Houston is a cultural melting pot home to a vibrant arts scene, thriving
ethnic neighborhoods and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Houston is one of
a handful of American cities to house professional theater companies for
each of the major arts disciplines. Sports fans can rally behind
Houston’s professional teams in nearly every major sport. Houston is
also home to the world’s largest concentration of medical professionals,
world’s largest rodeo and nationally acclaimed restaurants and shopping.

Lake Geneva Region, Gastronomic Destination Par Excellence, 2009/10

Filed under: Europe, Switzerland- Suisse, Places to Travel, Uncategorized — aherioslio @ 10:44 pm

Lausanne, October 2009

2010 GaultMillau Guide
Lake Geneva Region, Gastronomic Destination Par Excellence!

The 2010 GaultMillau Guide has rewarded eleven establishments, welcomes ten new ones and gives special recognition to Pierrick Suter by voting him “Romand of the year”(Swiss French). The Lake Geneva Region (Canton of Vaud) demonstrates once again that it is Switzerland’s prime gastronomic region and one of Europe’s areas most densely populated with excellent restaurants.

The 2010 edition of the prestigious gastronomic GaultMillau Guide, published on 13 October, unveils some excellent results in favour of the gastronomic fraternity of the Lake Geneva Region (Canton of Vaud). Eleven establishments have gained a point and ten make their first appearance in the Guide1.

As a tremendous distinction for the Hôtel de la Gare in Lucens, Pierrick Suter is awarded 16 points, and honoured with the title of the “Romand of the year”. Born near Moudon in the heart of the Vaud countryside, he learned his trade alongside some of the greatest chefs: Edgar Bovier, Bernard Ravet and Fredy Girardet. Fifteen years ago, he took over his wife’s business in Lucens, where he hasn’t stopped making improvements at the Hôtel de la Gare, a family hotel that has become a benchmark over the years.

Also worthy of note is the arrival of Anne-Sophie Pic this year at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne. She is a three-star chef, who received the rating of 18/20 in Valence (France). The Guide has not yet evaluated her in Lausanne.

Altogether, ninety-two (92) restaurants have scored 1253 GM points in the Lake Geneva Region2. This is a record, since the region has the highest proportion of good restaurants and points in Switzerland. Of course, these results reinforce the region’s gastronomic reputation and confirm its high standard in the art of good fine cuisine. It should also be noted that the Lake Geneva Region is home to Switzerland’s two chefs, who rate 19 GM points and the 3 Michelin stars, in the persons of Philippe Rochat in Crissier and Gérard Rabaey in Brent.

connoisseurs, most of them women, are planning to converge on Saint Lucia to
discuss climate change and tourism outreach to multicultural communities in
December.
Several top communications specialists from the Caribbean, North America and

the global recession in time for the 18thCaribbean Media Exchange
on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) slated for Saint Lucia from December 3 to 7,
2009.

strong local, regional and international interest, including a youth
contingent,” Dr. Springer noted, adding that with less than two months to go,

(OUTER BANKS, NC) October 16, 2009  The Outer Banks Scenic Byway received national status on Friday as one of Americas Byways, placing NC Highway 12 on the map, so to speak, for its fascinating coastal heritage and unique natural landscapes, making the leg of the historic two-lane highway from Nags Head, NC to Down East a perfect autumn drive for exploring the beauty of the barrier islands and connecting with the coastal communities that set the destination apart.

The Outer Banks touch people in different ways. Part of that connection, whether it is to the beach, or
the landscape, or to the memories made while vacationing here is inextricably linked to the drive, explains Lee Nettles, managing director for
the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau. When you round the curve of NC 12 and see Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Island for the first time, for
example, that never leaves you. Those moments of surprise and wonder continue the whole length of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. www.outerbanksscenicbyway.org

The itinerary for this newest national byway features drives along barrier islands featuring national landmarks and coastal villages and two car ferry
rides. The byway travels through two national seashores, Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, and two national wildlife refuges, Pea Island and Cedar
Island. Along the byway are four historic lighthouses and world famous stopovers for migrating song birds and waterfowl.

Scattered across this wild and scenic coastline are maritime villages with a common cultural heritage. Come on
down and Ill tell you a story, says Allen Burrus, whose family has operated a grocery store in Hatteras village since 1866.
Its not too hot and its not too cold and theres always room on the porch for sitting and greeting.

Delve into Ocracoke stories during the third season of Ocrafolk School, Oct. 25 through 30. Ocracokes history
and seafaring traditions will be explored in one of the schools classes. Other courses look into ships in bottles, island photography and
cooking, exploring songwriting and pottery.

More stories will be told this fall at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center on Harkers Island at the
southern entrance to the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway.

The museum and the Cape Lookout National Seashore celebrate the 150th anniversary of the lighting of the
Cape Lookout Lighthouse throughout the month of October culminating with a relighting ceremony on Nov. 1. The museum, which celebrates the maritime
heritage of North Carolinas true Down East, opens its main gallery with a two-day festival, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

To explore
the natural world that created byway stories, Wings over Water offers a six-day celebration of the wild side of the Outer Banks region. The Nov. 3 to
8 celebration features over 100 adventurous field trips, including kayaking at sunrise and sunset, exploring shifting sands, and venturing to the
close-by Gulf Stream to view seabirds.www.wingsoverwater.org
