On the agenda

Reunion Island and the city of Albi recently became Unesco world heritage sites
The World Heritage Committee held their 34th session in Brasilia from July 25th to August 3rd. The two sites proposed by France were accepted by the committee. The pitons, cirques and remparts of Reunion Island, as well as the episcopal city of Albi are now part of the prestigious list. France now totals 35 World Heritage sites.

2010 grape picking: take part and visit the vineyards
Pick grapes or watch others as they work…

La France des gourmets

Authentic taste of Guadeloupe
Besides sunny beaches, lush vegetation, good rums and beguine, the islands of Guadeloupe will win you over with their multitude of flavours! A Caribbean feast showcases abundant and tasty vegetables and fruits, inimitable sugarcane, honey, not to forget some authentic cultures recently going through a boom…

Wine domains and oenological classes on the French Riviera
These wines, among the best vintage wines of Provence, are worth discovering, notably the wine of Bellet, a small vineyard with a great reputation, producing aromatic whites and rich red wines.

Corsican local products and specialties
Rich in heritage, Corsica is equally rich in living traditions, in which gastronomy plays a central role.

Our favorites

Martinique, island of flowers and…museums!
Martinique, it is more than 6000 years of history, to be discovered through all its heritage. You will be staggered by all the Martinique treasures.

Explore Tahiti’s Waters
The warm, crystalline waters of Tahiti and its surrounding islands have for years beckoned to those who love the life aquatic. French Polynesia’s many oceanic drop-offs and lagoons offer a spectacular array of coral gardens, rare and vividly colored sea creatures, and water temperatures that hover between 79Ëš and 84ËšF all year. There are more ways to experience these warm tropical waters than you may think…

Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso Exhibits in Bern

Filed under: Zurich, Bern, Events, Europe, Switzerland- Suisse, Places to Travel — adelaSimons @ 9:41 am

Klee and Picasso – Two giants of art history

5 years Zentrum Paul Klee.

With a homage to Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso the Zentrum Paul Klee presents these two imposing exponents of modern art. The exhibition takes as its theme Klee’s analysis of Picasso and reveals unknown interwoven links. It shows how both artists, in quite different ways, wrote a new chapter of art history in the 20th century. A confrontation of two artistic universes and a cultural highlight of international significance.

Differences and similarities

Klee and Picasso are esteemed as outstanding antipodes of the history of 20th century art, and as artistic person-alities could hardly have been more different. One Mediterranean and worldly, the other romantic and spiritual: Klee’s poetic expression and his leaning towards satire and irony stand in contrast to Picasso’s drama, his sensual-ity and his pathos.

Despite all their differences in temperament, Klee and Picasso still belonged to the same generation and worked on a renewal of art from the sources of human creative energy. Also in the diversity of their pictorial language and in their unusual inventiveness they were similar to one another.

Picasso was a natural phenomenon. He drew all contemporaries under his spell and provoked them into either approval or opposition. Klee was also deeply impressed by Picasso. But as a great individualist he did not simply succumb to his influence, but set out with the aim of understanding the „Spaniard”. His artistic dialogue dis-played a mixture of admiration and critical irony, of acceptance and contradiction.

Picasso meets Klee

Klee and Picasso most probably met each other personally on two occasions during their life time: In 1933 in Picasso’s studio in Paris and in 1937 at Paul Klee’s house in Berne. Apart from this, both artists knew about one another and had seen each other’s works in exhibitions and publications. And now – over 70 years later – the two great masters meet again: in a unique exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee which illustrates in detail the complex relationship of the artists to one another.

Picture dialogues

The Picture Dialogues between Klee and Picasso are at the centre of the exhibition. It shows Picasso as a preco-cious child prodigy and Klee as a critical outsider, and places works from Picasso’s Blue and Pink periods oppo-site Klee’s satirical glass paintings. It shows major works by Picasso from the Cubist period and Klee’s response to this great revolution in the history of art in the 20th century. His painting < Homage to Picasso> from 1914 is the only tribute Klee ever accorded another artist.

A focal point of the exhibition consists of Picasso’s works from his surrealist phase in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The deformed bodies and distorted faces from this creative period coincided with Klee’s grotesque fantasies, and led to a pictorial conversation which profoundly influenced Klee’s late works in the 1930’s. Picasso’s large scale paint-ings and in particular his „Large Women” induced Klee to abandon his characteristic small scale format and cre-ate large canvases. And Picasso’s drastic depictions of emotions were also taken up by Klee and from these he developed the possibility of formulating expressive moods.

Despite all the stimulation which Klee derived from Picasso, he nevertheless always maintained his independence which makes his work unmistakable. As a great individualist, Klee formulated Picasso’s ideas for himself, and from Picasso‘s drama and sensuality, made compositions full of sensibility and poetry. In addition Klee’s pictorial commentaries were seldom without a deeper meaning or irony. Particularly Picasso’s pathos provoked him to parodistic commentaries.

The exhibition comprises over 180 works from the Zentrum Paul Klee, from numerous museums and private collections, such as famous collections in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museu Picasso, Barcelona, the Collection Berggruen, the National Gallery Berlin or the Centre Pompidou in Paris. A richly illustrated cata-logue accompanies the exhibition. The exhibition project is supported by the Picasso und Klee families.

Finlandin Brief
Aside from ice hockey, F1 drivers and mobile phones, Finland is perhaps best known for its lakes, forests and archipelago. There are hundreds of thousands of islands and lakes, and the dream of every Finn is to have a little cottage on the shore of one of them, a place where he can kick off his shoes, go fishing, and indulge in the sheer luxury of a good sauna.
Did you know that Finland has?

188,000 lakes (which account for 10% of the total surface area)
465,000 holiday homes

Gardens, not walls! Frankfurt celebrates the birth of a green city

Gardens, not walls! Frankfurt celebrates the birth of a green city Frankfurt, 25th May 2010 (tcf). Frankfurt’s former city walls are celebrating an historic birthday. Two hundred years ago, the City of Frankfurt enacted the so-called Wallservitut, an easement with which they moved to protect the parklands along the course of the former mediaeval city fortifications from destruction. This edict also helped to lay the foundation for further natural development within the city. Today, Frankfurt is one of Germany’s “greenest” urban centres, featuring over 50 parks and gardens within its city districts.  Today, the Anlagenring – a section of the former city walls now landscaped – forms a five-kilometre-long semicircle around the city centre. Visitors taking a walk along this green ring will come across fountains, ponds, ancient trees, modern sculptures, monuments and memorials, many of which serve as reminders of Frankfurt’s colourful history. The demolition of the former city walls had helped to bring about the establishment of English-style landscape gardens, which were continuously expanded over time. The former course of the star-shaped city fortifications is still recognisable upon closer examination of a city map. Starting at the massive euro symbol situated in front of the European Central Bank, Frankfurt’s green ring takes visitors past the Beethoven Memorial and Heinrich Heine Memorial to one of the city’s most beautiful locations: Opera Square and Alte Oper, Frankfurt’s grand old opera house and one of the city’s premier landmarks. A few hundred metres further on, one comes across the Nebbiensche Gartenhaus. This oasis of green, built in classicistic style in 1810, was one of the first glasshouses to be erected along the green pathway. Today, it is available for special-event hire. From here, it is not far to the Eschenheimer Tor, the only remaining city gate of the former mediaeval walls. Continuing on, one arrives at the Odeon, a popular dance club. Originally, this classicistic-styled structure was built by order of the Bethmanns, a famous Frankfurt banking family. For many years, it served as the home of the Museum of Sculptures. Taking a few steps away from the beaten track, walkers will arrive at the nearby Bethmann Park and its Chinese Garden, which was designed according to the principles of Feng Shui. Having returned to the green lane, one comes across Frankfurt’s most beautiful “outhouse”. Nowadays, these monument-listed former public toilets with their chapel-like dimensions are home to a cocktail bar named Lala Mamoona. The gabled roof and half-timbered framework provide an excellent background for the lounge music and relaxed atmosphere of this popular location. The end of the green ring is now only 750 metres away. The former municipal library, rebuilt in 2005 and now the home of the Frankfurt House of Literature, today presents itself as a beautiful café with an attached beer garden, inviting visitors to a refreshing respite. Those fit enough are urged to continue on down Frankfurt’s unique and very natural riverside promenade, which runs along both sides of the River Main. From here, beautiful views of the city’s skyline and surrounding area are guaranteed; in fact, they are best enjoyed from one of the riverside establishments while drinking a glass of Frankfurt apple wine. Frankfurt’s Anlagenring, the first such landscaped parklands to partially encircle a city centre in Germany, raised many eyebrows throughout Europe at the time of its creation. This green ring was instrumental in commencing the establishment of a series of parks and gardens that helped to transform Frankfurt am Main into a truly green city – a fact that often escapes attention due to the many other highlights found in the Main metropolis. With such an impressive skyline, it is hard to believe that the business and banking city of Frankfurt is also home to several nature reserves, such as Enkheim Moor in the city’s northeast, Schwanheim Forest in the southwest and Fechenheim Forest to the east. Two hundred years after the creation of the the green ring, Frankfurt’s “GreenBelt” has established itself as the city’s premier place of rest and recreation. Fully completed in 1991, it now encircles the city at a length of some 80 kilometres and consists of hiking and cycling paths as well as countless other recreational opportunities. During summer, the GreenBelt’s many public gardens attract visitors with their impressive variety of flora – be it Mediterranean, like at the Gardens of Niece at the banks of the River Main, baroque-style as at the Bolongaro Gardens, or spacious as the English landscaped parks of old, such as Grüneburgpark and Ostpark.  One location that’s particularly attractive all year round is the Palmengarten. Founded in 1868 with the kind donations of Frankfurt’s citizenry, these magnificent botanical gardens are home to some 3,000-odd species and varieties of plant. Here, visitors have the unique opportunity of experiencing plant life representing the most diverse climate zones. Frankfurt is also home to Germany’s largest city forest, a 5,000-hectare wood that extends from the airport to the city districts of Oberrad, Sachsenhausen and Niederrad. Recently, during Whitsuntide, Frankfurt locals once again headed to the city forest to celebrate their “national holiday”, the Wäldchestag, or “Forest Day”. This festival is unique to Frankfurt and has been taking place since 1792.
