Norfolk County foods - from A to Z.

Article - as it appeared in The Silo

As the promotions coordinator of Norfolk County tourism and local foods, I often get asked by city folks about our farmer’s markets.  This year, with the warmer weather and early summer, our crops seemed to just pop out of the ground and it “hit me” – our whole county is one big farmer’s market.

What can be better than stopping by a road-side stand to buy a dozen cobs of freshly –picked corn to eat only an hour later?  Or to take your kids to the local cherry farm, climb a ladder and pick your own cherries right off the tree?

Norfolk County is Canada’s most diverse agriculture area and is home to Canada’s and Ontario’s largest growers of some of your favorite foods.   Sweet potatoes, popping corn, peanuts, asparagus, apples, pumpkins and strawberries are only a selection.  But our local foods also include Lake Erie perch, cheese, honey, Texas Longhorn cattle, a variety of meat products, maple syrup – even wine.  People talk a lot about the “100-mile Diet” in other regions and large cities but can they truly get the variety and year-round selection that is found right here?

Norfolk County promotes its local foods with a campaign “Direct From Norfolk – Know Where your Food Comes From” and it is important for all of us to look for these labels and support the local growers and producers.   You can find over 50 farm gates, pick-your-own, markets, retail stores and restaurants , all growing and supporting the “local movement” , in the official map and local food guide published each year by the tourism and economic development department.

Local foods can be a lot of fun and a great learning experience.  With the popularity of television food channels and celebrity chefs, cooking and local foods have become “cool”.   New terms like “agri-tourism” and “culinary tourism” have emerged as reasons to travel.   If you think about a trip to Italy, what would be your one thing to try?  Pizza? Wine?    Travellers seek out these unique agri-tourism experiences and local food establishments.  If they can “walk the crop” at a nearby strawberry field and learn about the many varieties and differences of strawberries, then purchase their own basket to snack on – they’ve had a great Norfolk County food experience.  If they can horseback ride through a shitake mushroom  farm, then enjoy a western-style barbecue on a picnic table in the woods, served with their own hand-picked mushrooms – they’ve had a great Norfolk County food experience.  The popular coined phrase “field to fork” becomes reality.

It’s an exciting time with local foods as we think more about health benefits, great-taste and helping the environment.  Norfolk County continues to attract new types of crops, such as the Goji Berry and ginseng and to appeal to more businesses joining the “culinary” trend.  You can visit www.norfolkfarms.com to find local foods, recipes and stay current with events and food festivals.  Whether you’re a resident of Norfolk County or just visiting, enjoy our county-wide farmer’s market.  Great flavours, great fun and experiences you’ll never forget.

MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA HITS CAPITAL WATERS
Celebrating 21 years of delighting audiences, Symphony Splash is an unforgettable event set to make musical waves on August 1, 2010. Known to be one of Victoria BCs most popular free summer events and the largest annual symphony event in North America, playing to over 40,000 residents and visitors, this musical extravaganza transforms Victorias picturesque Inner Harbour into an outdoor concert venue. As the Victoria Symphony plays from a barge moored in the middle of the harbour in front of the Provincial Legislature, visitors and residents alike are encouraged to bring a chair and a blanket, or even a boat or a kayak from which to watch the spectacular concert. For those looking for a seat which adds a little something extra, The Fairmont Empress Veranda offers a birds-eye view of the symphony along with sumptuous bites from Chef Ito and Team, coupled with innovative cocktails from their master mixologists. A reservation for a seat on the Veranda costs $150 CDN/ $142 USD which can then be used as a credit towards guests food and beverage purchases during the event. As the sun sets the orchestra plays a perfect blend of classics and popular favourites, creating a magical evening that comes to a dramatic close with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and an impressive fireworks display. Tania Miller, the Music Director of the Victoria Symphony, is not only the youngest conductor of a major Canadian orchestra but also the first Canadian woman to be appointed to such a position. Curious young campers are invited to Victoria, BC this summer and encouraged to put on their explorer hats and delve behind the scenes at the amazing, delightful, and wondrous world of the Royal BC Museum. The museum offers a week long day camp geared towards kids aged eight to 10 who have an interest in seeing what goes on behind the museum walls. Camp Inside Out will be offered twice during the month of August, August 9-13 and August 23-27, with each camp running Monday to Friday from 9 am - 4 pm, at a cost of $224 CDN / $213 USD per week. Highlights of the camps program include meeting Royal BC Museum curators and special effects crews, dissecting owl pellets for rodent bones, exploring the museums hidden collections and learning about BCs biodiversity through activities, games, and field trips. Along with enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, campers are asked to bring their own lunch and snacks for the day. Camp Inside Out runs as a complement to the museums current feature exhibition, Behind the Scenes.  The first in a two-part series to celebrate the 2010 UNESCO International Year of Biodiversity, Behind the Scenes focuses on the museums natural history staff, their research and collections which are arranged into eight natural history disciplines ornithology (birds), entomology (insects), ichthyology (fish), paleontology (fossils), botany (plants), herpetology (reptiles and amphibians), invertebrate zoology and mammalogy. AmusEum, an interactive space for explorers 10 and younger, the Biodiversity Lounge, a place to browse Royal BC Museum work, and a small feature show about invasive species called Aliens Among Us are other highlights of the exhibition. Part two of the series opens in the summer of 2012 and will shine the spotlight on human history. Le Tour De Norfolk - Ready to Ride this Weekend

Le Tour De Norfolk - Ready to Ride this Weekend

Delhi, ON – If you like to ride a bicycle, Norfolk County is the place to be this upcoming weekend (July 17-18) for the fourth annual Tour de Norfolk presented by Tim Hortons.  Cheryl Nelson, one of the local Tim Hortons’ owners in Norfolk County supporting the event explains, “This is the type of event that appeals to a wide range of people and is a great fun activity for families to do together.”  Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace and routes range in distance from 15 km to 160 km.  The event attracts people of all levels of fitness and all ages from eight to 88.  Rest stops along the way provide refreshments and snacks.

“It is an excellent opportunity to explore the quaint towns and villages, see and learn about the crops growing in the fields, and to explore the picturesque back roads of Norfolk County,” says Cindy Vanderstar, Promotions Coordinator for Norfolk County Tourism.  Yvette Mahieu, event organizer and an avid cycling enthusiast adds that Norfolk County is a cyclist’s paradise with its quiet, paved roads and beautiful scenery.

Last year’s event attracted 650 cyclists who came from all corners of the province and from as far away as Michigan, New Jersey and Kentucky.

Delhi has a rich history in cycling dating back to the 1930s when Belgian immigrants brought their love of Belgium’s national sport to the area.  Cycling memorabilia from that era as well as bicycles from the 1880’s will be on display at the Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre as part of their exhibit entitled “Backpedalling”.

Brochures with registration forms are available at Tim Hortons’ outlets throughout Norfolk County and bike shops throughout Ontario.  More information and on-line registration are available on Le Tour’s website at www.letourdenorfolk.com or call  519-582-1900  519-582-1900 .

The Religious Patrimony of Île d’Orléans

The Religious Patrimony of Île d’Orléans is a new brochure showcasing centuries of heritage of Île d’Orléans, which is both an island in the St. Lawrence River and a historical borough in its own right. There is a particular focus on architecture and original works, including art, furniture, stained-glass windows and ornamentation.

This beautifully illustrated brochure describes the noteworthy or unique treasures found on Île d’Orléans, be they architectural, artistic or cultural in nature. The strength of this comprehensive document lies in the abundance of complementary information, such as a map of the island indicating major sites, a timeline of the island’s history and detailed visual glossaries.
