COUNTRY’S ONLY CRUISE SHIP-THEMED CHILDREN’S EXHIBIT SET SAIL ON SEPTEMBER 1 AT MIAMI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM: In a nod to maritime tradition, Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines and the Miami Children’s Museum uncorked a confetti-filled bottle of champagne to officially re-launch of the country’s only cruise-themed children’s exhibit. After an extensive renovation, the redesigned 1,850-square-foot cruise ship-shaped attraction now features a host of new hands-on activities that provide oceans of fun and help kids learn the secrets behind one of South Florida’s largest industries. At the two-level exhibit, kids sail on a sea of discovery as they create their own cruise-themed puppet show, listen to actual recordings of a captain bringing a ship into port, dress up as entertainers, play steel drums and “see how low they can go” with a fun limbo activity. SOLEA AT THE W SOUTH BEACH INTRODUCES FIRST EVER COCKTAIL LIST: Located at the W South Beach, Solea, the award-winning culinary hotpot introduces its first ever cocktail list, created by bartender Tommy Merolla from the W’s bar/lounge Living Room, as well as a slew of exciting new dishes. Brought to the forefront nationally by the recent feature in the New York Times on Living Room’s couture cocktails, Miami’s evolving mixology movement has infused the restaurant with a vibrant new spirit. Honoring the restaurant’s Spanish roots and embracing the vibrant energy of Miami, the list of ten libations, priced at $14 each, is an exciting melding of classic and contemporary ingredients. Much like the individual layers that come together so exquisitely in each of Solea’s dishes, the cocktails’ ingredients are fresh, made in-house and often unusual or difficult-to-find. Elements such as fresh cilantro, basil and ginger root; aloe vera gel; lavender gin; strawberry yuzu; cinnamon simple syrup; bison grass infused vodka; orange blossom water; and cardamom bitters bring an intriguing balance and presentation of flavors, and make sipping a cocktail before, during or after a meal a culinary experience all its own. A NEW PRODUCTION FROM THE CREATORS OF STOMP TO MAKE ITS U.S. DEBUT IN MIAMI THIS FALL LAUNCHING THE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER 5TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON: The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County announced the kick-off to its 5th Anniversary Season with the U.S. premiere of PANDEMONIUM: The Lost and Found Orchestra. From the creators of the blockbuster hit STOMP, this modern, urban symphonic adventure features a cast of 25 performers plus a 30-member choir of local Miami singers. Fresh from sold-out performances in London, Sydney, and Amsterdam, PANDEMONIUM is poised to take Miami by storm, September 16-26, 2010 in the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House. Where STOMP creates rhythm with everyday objects, PANDEMONIUM transforms everyday objects into a plethora of invented instruments. Performed by the LFO (Lost and Found Orchestra), PANDEMONIUM recreates every section of a symphony orchestra, using musical saws, bottles, whirly toys and traffic cones. Out of chaos emerges an orchestra. Visit www.arshtcenter.org for up-to-date information for details and schedules.

The opening of Secada’s at Magic City Casino will be another career highlight for this internationally recognized Latin crossover singer-songwriter and actor who starred in Broadway hit musicals including Grease and Sam Mendes’ critically acclaimed version of Cabaret. In fact, Secada’s career is currently booming. FOR THE 10TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY WILL SERVE AS HOST TO NASCAR’S FORD CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND IN 2011: South Florida again will be the site when NASCAR crowns its Champions in all three of its top national divisions–the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series– the weekend of Nov.18-20, 2011. It’s a unique privilege to host the Championship finales of America’s No.1 spectator sport for a 10th year running. No other city in any other sport can claim such a string: Consider that the Super Bowl, college football’s BCS, the World Series, NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals all rotate their Championship-crowning events from city to city each year. Since the debut of Ford Championship Weekend in 2002, Homestead-Miami Speedway has played host to historic NASCAR Championship moments, including last fall when Jimmie Johnson became the first driver ever to claim four consecutive Sprint Cup Championships. In 2004, Homestead-Miami hosted the first-ever NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, as Kurt Busch became the first to hoist the “Chase” hardware. All told, Homestead-Miami has seen 18 different NASCAR Champions crowned. Kids FREE: Homestead-Miami Speedway is the only venue ever to host all of North America’s premier motorsports Championships, and they’re doing it again in 2010 in hosting both the NextEra Energy Indy Championships (Oct.1-2) and NASCAR’s Ford Championship Weekend (Nov.19-21). Kids 12 & under are FREE to three of the five Championship finales. A NEW PRE-HEAT GAME DATE SPOT: Amuse, a glossy den of modern French cooking, is now open at Tempo Miami hotel. Despite its location across the street from the AA Arena, this is a relatively quiet, off-the-radar spot to take a date. Walking into the third-floor restaurant, the first thing you’ll want to do is look out the great sprawl of glass framing views of the bay. Take a deep breath and bask. Then, claim a couple of leather chairs and get things socially lubed with a beer or a Cucumber Lemonade. When you’ve got her laughing about your thoughts on Dan Le Batard’s chest hair, step over to the adjacent dining room and ask for a table by the 30-foot-tall windows overlooking the arena. That’s where you’ll want to dive into the mostly Californian wine list and summon plates from the no-stranger-to-Michelin-stars Argentinean/French chef like Soft Shell Crab Tempura, sake ice cream and braised short ribs with scoops of mango beer sorbet. Nothing pairs with alley-oops like mango beer sorbet. For more information call (786) 369-0300 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (786) 369-0300 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or visit http://tempomiami.rockresorts.com/dining/amuse.asp.
CONSTRUCTION BEGINS AT MIAMI CIRCLE SITE: At the mouth of the Miami River, an instant city of high-rise condos popped up around the 2,000-year-old Miami Circle in far less time than it took the state of Florida to devise a plan for public access to the ancient Native American site. Now, 11 years after taxpayers ponied up $27 million to save the archaeological relic from getting buried under a condo slab, earthmovers are finally at work transforming the 2.2-acre parcel into the city’s newest — and perhaps most resonant — waterfront park. That the first phase of the Miami Circle Park is close to completion is in large part due to an obscure state board — the Florida Inland Navigation District, known as FIND — that stepped in to help close a budget gap that threatened to again halt the long-delayed project. But by late November or early December, planners say, residents and visitors should gain unfettered access to the site via a new, palm-shaded riverwalk that connects to a year-old public baywalk behind the Icon Brickell condo complex next door. For an urban park, the roughly $1 million plan is simple and frugal: Aside from the riverwalk, it includes some landscaping, lighting and signage. A drop-off loop will provide auto access from Brickell Avenue. The ancient circle itself will for the foreseeable future remain buried for protection, its circumference delineated by paving stones. A new “ceremonial” circle will occupy the point where the river meets Biscayne Bay, a location archaeologists believe held special significance for the Tequesta tribe, Miami’s original developers.

Visitors can also join the many GPS and geocaching enthusiasts celebrating the opening of the new GPS Adventure exhibition. Earlier this year, the Chico area welcomed the Gateway Science Museum, located in a chic modern building, which is surrounded by a unique landscape. Visitors will find five separate eco-regions, including a paleo flora area, riparian zone, buffer zone, delta and northern lower mountain region.
In the North Coast Region, there’s wine tasting in unusual places - including Safari West in Santa Rosa. The new Wines over Watusi program launches in October to coincide with the grape harvest in Sonoma and Napa Valley. This unique offer includes a private safari for 10 people with one of Safari West’s knowledgeable guides, touring their 400-acre Sonoma County preserve, with the addition of a private wine tasting somewhere along the trail. Famed vintner Mike Draxton, who has produced wines for a number of labels including El Roy, Heliodoro and Henry Bronson, is opening a tasting room in Geyserville’s Alexander Valley. All of his wines are made from estate-grown or purchased grapes from the Alexander Valley.
In the San Francisco Bay Area Region, travelers coming to Oakland for business or pleasure now have even more options for downtown accommodations. The newly-opened Clarion Hotel Oakland, located at13th Street and Franklin, offers easy access to BART, the Fox Oakland and Paramount Theatres, the Oakland Museum of California, Old Oakland Chinatown and the many fine restaurants in the area. Two consecutive special exhibitions, “Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’OrsayVan Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne” and “Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay” are at the de Young Museum in San Francisco through January 2011.
Delta Discovery Cruises, a family-owned business, has expanded its operations to include the City of Stockton in the Central Valley Region. Hyatt Place UC Davis recently opened, conveniently situated on the beautiful University of California, Davis college campus.
In the Gold Country Region, Mark Twain’s “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” short story catapulted Twain and Calaveras County into fame. Today, Mark Twain is celebrated in Angels Camp, where there are numerous sculptures, statues and events honoring the author. The most recent tribute to Twain is a new permanent exhibit at the Angels Camp Museum.
It’s pure luxury in the High Sierra Region, as the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite National Park recently opened the 10,000-square-foot Ascent Spa, as well as 15,000-square-foot enhanced comprehensive conference facility. The new spa increases the AAA four-diamond resort’s wellness offerings with new treatment rooms, dry saunas, steam rooms and health classes for guests to enjoy. After much anticipation, the Truckee Railroad Museum opened its doors May 8, on National Train Day. Situated right next to the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks and the downtown train depot, the museum is housed in a caboose and features displays of models, historic photographs and artifacts representing the area’s rich railroad heritage.
In the Central Coast Region, Santa Barbara Adventure Company paired two favorite treats to create a new, mouthwatering adventure: the Tasty Cupcake & Wine Tour. Guests tour the Santa Ynez Valley tasting wine and learning the difference between a pinot blanc and a pinot gris, as on a typical wine tour. But the icing on the cake is a stop at Enjoy Cupcakes in Solvang, where guests sample six miniature wine-infused cupcakes with incredible flavors, such as Pomegranate Mango Chardonnay and Chocolate Blackberry Syrah. Riders on the Studio Tour tram are transported, via a darkened soundstage, back to King Kong’s home - Skull Island. The action, which takes place before King Kong ever makes his way to the modern world, culminates in a ferocious battle between the world’s most famous ape and a 35-foot dinosaur.
In the Orange County Region, the Discovery Science Center’s newest permanent exhibit, “Rocket Lab,” launched in July in Santa Ana. Located inside the museum’s famous cube, this Lab highlights the history and science behind rocket travel. Experience a rocket launch by surrounding yourself by video screens, blasts of fog and state-of-the-art sound effects. “World of Color” debuted earlier this summer as the first major milestone in the expansion of Disney’s California Adventure Park in Anaheim. “World of Color” brings Disney animation to life with powerful fountains that become stars of the show as they create the world’s largest projected water screen by combining hundreds of magnificent fountains, dazzling colors and an all-new kaleidoscope of audio and visual effects.
Two new boutique hotels have opened in Palm Springs in the Deserts Region. The Pool House is a mid-century boutique hotel that opened in May. La Fee Verte, Miami’s first members-only burlesque and absinthe club, opened in June 2010 in North Miami Beach. French for “the green fairy,” La Fee Verte is like a 1920s Paris bordello crossed with the Delano and a dash of The Shining. Everything is meant to arouse-from the vintage erotica on the bar’s countertop to the women’s bathroom walls clad with midcentury strippers to the swings suspended from the ceiling that double as lounge seating. You’ll want to get here around 11pm-bring some friends or a date you want to seduce-and pile onto an oversized bed in the VIP area to catch the stripteases, aerial tricks and contortions that go on each hour. From there, you’ll begin an absinthe-fueled journey fraught with old standbys (Pernod, Lucid) and novel varieties (a white version from Switzerland, absinthe chilled through an ice block). And if you get tired of taking it straight, barkeeps will be mixing up the green elixir with champagne or classic cocktails like Sazeracs. 912 71st St., Miami Beach, FL 33141, 305-865-5955 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 305-865-5955 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, http://www.clublafeeverte.com.

SAWA Restaurant & Lounge (which means “together), has arrived to the upscale shopping venue of the Village of Merrick Park. In the heart of Coral Gables, SAWA is the suave and sexy Mediterranean restaurant, bar and lounge from charismatic restaurateur Ramzi Zahr. This reasonably priced eatery, which also offers an exciting list of cocktails, and a sidewalk cabana/hookah lounge, showcases executive chef Jouvens Jean, formerly of Atrio and Solea, who creates a melding of Mediterranean inspired spreads, kebabs, salads, entrees, and by popular demand, sushi. An intimate 2,500 square foot space that seats 60 indoors and up to 70 outdoors was designed with the harmonious balance of yin and yang in mind. The interior boasts dark wooden tables, bar and chairs with white leather upholstery and funky white chandeliers. Crisp white walls are tastefully dressed in the vibrant art by Chady Elias who will change his “interactive art” exhibits every few months. Legendary NYC burger spot, Shake Shack set up shop in Miami in June 2010. This location, housed on the ground floor of the cutting-edge 1111 parking garage, differs from its NY siblings in that it’s mostly an indoors affair. There’ll be tables outside eventually, but for now the handsome interior, with its 30-foot ceilings and counters made from repurposed bowling alleys, is where you’ll bring a date before catching a movie across the street, or after a long day of beach volleyball with a gaggle of Eastern Bloc women (Estonians prefer extra relish). As far as the retro-American snack grub, here’s what you should expect: griddle-cooked burgers on the smallish side, made with fresh-ground, antibiotic- and hormone-free Black Angus beef. They’re cooked to order, so while you’re waiting for your ShackBurger (American cheese, lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce), you can sink a straw into one of the restaurant’s trademark super-thick shakes made with vanilla custard. And because it’s an indoors joint, you can also cut loose with an Abita, ShackMeister Ale or Brooklyn Lager. 111 Lincoln Rd Building on Lenox Ave; South Beach; 305.434.7787 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 305.434.7787 end_of_the_skype_highlighting

A New Car Rental Center has opened at Miami International Airport, for the first time bringing under one roof all the major and many of the smaller car rental companies that offer vehicles at MIA. The opening of the rental car center will mark completion of the first major phase of the $1.7-billion Miami Intermodal Center travel hub, which by 2015 will connect in one site virtually all county modes of transportation: aircraft, cars, Metrorail, Tri-Rail, Amtrak and perhaps in the future high-speed rail. The MIC, as the travel hub is known, is one of three major transportation projects underway in South Florida — along with the $1.8-billion reconstruction of Interstate 595 in central Broward, and the $1-billion construction of a tunnel under Biscayne Bay to the Port of Miami. The new system will replace the multiple rental car shuttle buses now operating at MIA, one of the key contributors to traffic congestion on the MIA road network. Reducing congestion at and around MIA and linking modes of transportation in one hub have been key concepts behind construction of the MIC, which includes the rental car center, the still-under-construction Miami central station and transit services and major upgrades on roads leading to the airport. The MIA Mover station will be housed at the Miami central station, which will also house new platforms for Metrorail, Tri-Rail, Amtrak and eventually perhaps a high-speed rail to Orlando and Tampa.
