STATUE OF LIBERTY TO REOPEN OCTOBER 28TH AFTER ONE-YEAR RENOVATION

New York City (September 12, 2012) — New York City’s famed Statue of Liberty will reopen to the public on October 28, 2012, her 126th birthday, after a year-long renovation.

Visitors will be allowed entrance on a limited basis while the $27.25 million-project, which included long-planned safety and other critical facility renovations, moves to completion by the end of 2012.

Located on a 12-acre island in New York Harbor, the Statue, Liberty Enlightening the World, was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
